| This is my dog Spirit. People have asked me why I decided to name her that. I tell them I named her spirit because the night before I got her I had a dream that a firefighter had given me rot wilier puppy he rescued from a burning building. Well, later that day as my daughter and I were pulling into attention, so I gave a slight toot of my horn to move them along. As they turn to face me, I could see that one of the little girls had something tiny wrapped in a blanket in her arms. I asked what it was because I knew it was too small to be a baby, and behold, there was this little puppy whimpering with it's eyes barely open, the same puppy from my dream. Of course my first reaction was, Awe! Jokingly I said "Can I have it"? Sure enough the little girl holding the puppy, launched the puppy into my arms. She said that some man's dog had puppies and he did not want them and was giving them away. They said they would go back and get another one and I could have this one. Of course by then my 9 year old daughter was asking me "Can we keep it?" I thought about my dream and said yes. Thinking back to my dream and how some people say that a dream is an experience of the spirit, We decided to name the puppy 'Spirit'. Spirit is now an 16-year-old female Terreior/Shepard; not the Rottweilder in my dreams, but that's OK. She is my inspiration to start this service. I took Spirit with me to the mountains one beautiful day. I was doing some fly fishing and I watched her eat some grass (I've heard that some dogs do this for their stomach) in not a moments notice she starts regurgitating. I figured it wasn't a big problem until she suddenly started to choke. I started to pat her on her sides. This did not work so we headed back to the car. I did not have a clue where any type of animal care services were located in this area. I had my cellphone but what good was it if I did not know where I was calling too, or who too call? All I know is I was at Bear Creek Lake not far from the highway. I could see in her eyes something was very wrong. I drove maybe 40 miles down the mountain to a clinic that I was familiar with. We got to the animal emergency hospital while waiting in the emergency room, Spirit burped... And there it was! A piece of grass sticking out of the side of her mouth, as I proceed to pull it out, it was estimated to be about 11 inches. The veterinarian told me that she was aspirating fluids back into her lungs and would have drowned if I had wasted any more time in getting her in. WOW... Or should we say Bow-Wow! Spirit is fine, and still enjoys the mountains and doesn't eat grass! Throughout this adventure, something occurred to me, what If there were a service that I could have called and gotten information right there on the spot! Get the information I needed for close by help, instead of having to drive so far to get the pet care she needed. phone! And that's how 'Pet Experience Travel Services' (P.E.T.S.) was born. updated 2008 |

On May 20, 2005 Spirit was diagnosed with tumors in her lungs. It could've been cancerous but at the time, we could not tell. My heart was broken to hear this news. Spirit had been with me and my family for some 12 years. This was devastating news so we set out on our journey to discover the damages the tumor had caused. I agreed to have surgery performed on her May 23, I was still in shock! A few hours after the surgery I went to see my boo-boo. She pulled away from me and went to the back of her cage. I was hurt but I was assured that it was the medicine she was on that made her act that way. After several days of observation Spirit was allowed to come home..YEAH! Her pathology results came back quickly and remarkably THE TUMOR WAS NOT CANCEROUS AND SHOWED NO DISEASED GROWTH! I'm so glad I made the right decision to have the operation. Some owners are not so fortunate to have the finances to have this type of procedure done. That's when good pet care insurance comes in handy. Ask us how you can get your pet insured. Spirit is doing fine, and looks forward to a longer healthy life. Janice Stevenson-Founder of Pet Experience Travel Services. |
